고래는 이따금 이유 없이 뭍으로 올라와 생을 마감한다. ‘스트랜딩’이라 불리는 이 현상에 대해 수많은 가설이 존재하지만, 명확한 원인은 밝혀지지 않았다. 나는 스스로 물 밖으로 나와 숨을 멈추는 고래들의 모습에서 견디기 힘든 현실 앞에서 삶을 내려놓는 사람들을 비춰보았다.

고래가 왜 그런 선택을 했는지 아무도 알 수 없듯, 벼랑 끝에 선 사람의 깊은 속마음 또한 누구도 온전히 헤아릴 수 없다. 그저 묵묵히 뭍으로 올라온 고래들의 모습은 마치 긴 휴식을 청하는 것처럼 보이기도 한다.

작품 속 나무 형상의 거울은 고래가 살아생전 바다에서는 볼 수 없었던 죽음 너머의 풍경이다. 뭍에 올라와서야 비로소 마주한 이 낯선 숲은 그들에게 건네는 마지막 안식처다.

이 작업은 떠난 이들의 알 수 없는 고통을 위로하는 동시에, 남겨진 우리의 마음을 어루만진다. 고래가 마침내 다다른 숲을 바라보며, 당신의 지친 마음에도 잠시나마 평안이 깃들기를 바란다.

Occasionally, whales beach themselves without any clear reason, coming to the end of their lives on the shore. While many hypotheses exist about this phenomenon, known as “stranding,” no definitive cause has ever been found. Watching these whales move out of the water, I saw a reflection of people who, overwhelmed by an unbearable reality, quietly lay down the burdens of life.

Just as the whales’ choice remains a mystery, no one can fully fathom the depths of a person standing at the edge of a precipice. The sight of these whales, silently resting on the shore, seems like a long-awaited pause after a weary journey.

The tree-shaped mirror in this piece represents a landscape beyond life—a view the whales could never see while alive in the ocean. This unfamiliar forest, encountered only upon reaching the shore, serves as a final sanctuary offered to them.

This work seeks to comfort the unknowable pain of those who have departed, while also soothing the hearts of those who remain. As you gaze upon the forest the whales have finally reached, may a quiet moment of peace also settle within your own weary heart.
