우리, 

 동물은 사람처럼 고통과 만족을 느끼고, 일부는 인간 사회와 비슷한 관계를 맺으며 살아간다. 하지만 인간과 동물이 서로를 바라보는 위치는 다르다.

 나는 동물원 속 좁은 우리 안에서 정형행동을 반복하는 동물들을 보며, 보이지 않는 사회적 틀에 갇혀 불안을 안고 살아가는 사람들의 모습을 떠올렸다. 물리적인 '우리'에 갇힌 동물은 결국 이 시대를 살아가는 '우리'와 크게 다르지 않다고 느꼈다.

 우리 속 동물의 상태를 바라보며, 나 역시 억압된 환경 속에서 어떤 상태로 살아가고 있는지를 자각하게 된다. 이 작업은 동물의 이야기를 하면서, 동시에 우리의 이야기를 건네고 있다.

Animals, like humans, feel pain and satisfaction, and some form social bonds similar to those found in human society. However, the ways in which humans and animals view one another remain different.

Watching animals repeat the same movements within narrow zoo enclosures reminded me of people living with anxiety, confined by invisible social frameworks. The animals trapped in physical cages felt, in many ways, not so different from “us” living in this time.

Observing their condition leads me to recognize my own state of living within a constrained environment. While this work speaks about animals, it is also, inevitably, a reflection of ourselves.
