경계

동물원 속 좁은 우리에 갇힌 동물들이 온종일 죽은 듯 잠자는 모습을 쉽게 발견할 수 있다. 나는 스트레스를 받아 죽은 듯이 잠을 자는 동물에게서 보이지 않는 사회의 틀에 갇혀 우울과 수면장애를 앓는 현대인의 모습을 보았다.

 나에게 잠이란 '삶'과 '죽음' 사이에 머무는 시간이다. 짧은 잠이 삶을 지탱하는 쉼표라면, 긴 잠은 죽음과 닮아있다. 고통스러운 현실을 잊기 위해, 우리는 눈을 감고 그 경계로 숨어든다. 작업 속 동물들은 잠들어 있는 것인지, 숨이 멎은 것인지 모호하게 표현된다. 삶을 포기하고 싶은 것인지, 살고 싶어 도피한 것인지 알 수 없는 동물의 속마음을 대변하기 위해 일부 동물은 신체를 등분하지 않고 모호한 덩어리로 남겨두었다. 반면, 등분된 신체 틈새에는 그들이 본능적으로 그리워할 서식지의 풍경을 담았다. 갈라진 몸 사이로 보이는 자연은 억압된 현실과 대비되는 자유의 공간이자, 그들이 꿈꾸는 안식처다.

 좁은 우리 속의 동물과 사회 속의 인간, 우리는 같은 고통을 공유하는 존재이다. 이 작업이 현실의 무게에 짓눌려 잠으로 도피해야 했던 모든 존재에게, 위로되길 바란다.

The Boundary

 In the cramped cages of a zoo, it is common to find animals sleeping all day, appearing as if dead. In these animals, slumbering deeply from stress, I saw a reflection of modern humans suffering from depression and sleep disorders, trapped within the invisible frameworks of society.

To me, sleep is a time that hovers between "life" and "death." If brief sleep is a comma that sustains life, a long slumber bears a resemblance to death. To forget a painful reality, we close our eyes and retreat into that boundary.

The animals in my work are depicted with ambiguity it is unclear whether they are merely sleeping or have ceased to breathe. To represent their unknowable hearts whether they wish to give up on life or have fled into sleep to survive some animals are left as undivided, vague forms.

In contrast, the fissures within the divided bodies reveal landscapes of the habitats they instinctively long for. The nature glimpsed through these gaps is a space of freedom, contrasting with their oppressed reality, and the sanctuary they dream of.

Animals in cramped cages and humans in society we are beings who share the same pain. I hope this work offers comfort to every being forced to escape into sleep, crushed by the weight of reality.
