새에게 비행은 본능이다. 높고 멀리 날 수 있다는 가능성, 그 자체가 삶이다. 하지만 윙컷은 안전을 이유로 그 가능성을 덜어낸다. 비행깃이 잘린 새는 날지 못하는 것이 아니다. 날 수는 있지만, 그 반경이 철저하게 제한될 뿐이다.

나의 작업은 이 ‘제한된 비행’을 바라보는 것에서 출발한다. 한국 사회를 살아가는 우리 또한 안정적인 궤도에 머물러야 한다는 압박을 느낀다. 정해진 경로를 벗어난 선택은 위태로운 것으로 치부되고, 그 과정에서 각자의 고유한 가능성은 ‘안전’이라는 이름 아래 다듬어지거나 축소된다.

나는 이 구조가 윙컷을 당한 새들의 삶과 닮았다고 느꼈다. 실내에서의 안전을 위해 비행의 높이를 제한당한 새처럼, 사람들 또한 사회가 요구하는 기준에 맞춰 삶의 반경과 꿈의 크기를 스스로 조절하며 살아간다.

102동 703호는 내가 실제 거주하는 아파트의 주소다. 이곳은 안전한 보금자리인 동시에, 나를 규정하는 하나의 틀이다. 작업 속에서 아파트는 새장이 되고, 그 안의 인간은 멀리 나는 법을 잊어가는 새로 표현된다.

이 작업은 특정한 삶을 비판하거나 정답을 내리려 하지 않는다. 다만 ‘괜찮은 삶’이라 불리는 구조 안에서 우리가 무엇을 포기한 채 살아가고 있는지를 조용히 드러낸다.

비행을 멈춘 새와 꿈을 줄여온 나는 그저 다시 날 수 있을지도 모른다는 가능성을 마음 한켠에 남겨둔다.

Unit 703, Bldg 102

For a bird, flying is instinct. The very act of soaring high and far is what gives life its shape. But wing clipping takes away part of that freedom in the name of safety. A bird with clipped wings isn’t grounded entirely; it can still move, but only within a tightly defined range.

My work starts from watching this “restricted flight.” Living in Korean society, we, too, feel the pressure to stay on a steady path. Any choice that strays from the expected orbit is labeled risky, and in the process, our unique possibilities get trimmed down under the guise of safety.

I saw a clear parallel between this social structure and the lives of clipped-wing birds. Just as birds have their flight curtailed for indoor safety, people adjust the radius of their lives and the scale of their dreams to fit the limits society sets.

Unit 703, Bldg 102 is the apartment where I actually live. It’s both a safe haven and a framework that shapes me. In this work, the apartment becomes a cage, and the human within is depicted as a bird that has forgotten how to fly.

This piece doesn’t aim to criticize any way of life or offer answers. It simply shows what we give up to survive within the structure of a so-called “decent life.” Like the bird that has paused its flight, I, who have scaled down my own dreams, hold a quiet space in my heart for the possibility of flying again.
