조약돌

사랑은 오랜 시간 인류가 소중히 여겨온 보편적인 감정이다. 우리는 흔히 사랑을 따뜻함, 붉은색, 혹은 하트 모양 같은 익숙한 상징으로 정의한다. 하지만 나는 문득 궁금증이 생겼다. "만약 사랑이 물리적인 형태를 가진다면, 그것은 어떤 모습일까?"

나는 그 답을 아델리펭귄에게서 찾았다. 펭귄에게 조약돌은 단순한 돌이 아니다. 수컷은 가장 아름다운 조약돌을 암컷에게 건네고, 암컷이 이를 받아들이면 그 돌은 둥지의 기초가 된다. 그러나 남극 탐험가들의 기록에 따르면, 이 행동이 항상 순수한 구애만을 의미하지는 않는다고 한다. 펭귄들은 때로 생존을 위해 돌을 거래하거나, 다른 펭귄의 돌을 훔치기도 한다.

나는 이 복잡함에서 사랑의 본질을 보았다. 사랑은 언제나 아름답기만 하지 않다. 때로는 절박하고, 소유욕과 계산이 뒤섞여 있으며, 날것 그대로의 감정들이 모여 관계의 기초를 만든다.

작업 속 이미지를 구성하기 위해 나는 휴대전화 갤러리를 들여다보았다. 내가 소중히 여기는 순간들, 직접 포착한 것들을 드로잉으로 옮기며 나만의 ‘사랑의 상징’, 조약돌들을 작품 안에 채웠다.

Pebbles

Love is a universal emotion, cherished by humanity for ages. We often define it through familiar symbols warmth, the color red, or the shape of a heart. But I found myself wondering: “If love had a physical form, what would it look like?”

I found the answer in the Adélie penguin. To a penguin, a pebble is never just a stone. A male offers the most beautiful pebble to a female, and if she accepts it, the pebble becomes the foundation of their nest. Yet records from Antarctic explorers show that this gesture is not always pure romance. Penguins may trade stones for survival, or even steal them from others.

In this complexity, I saw the essence of love. It is not always beautiful or gentle. It can be desperate, possessive, calculated and yet, these raw emotions come together to form the foundation of a bond.

To build the imagery for this work, I turned to my phone gallery. The moments I hold dear, the fleeting instances I captured myself, became drawings my own “symbols of love,” my pebbles, embedded into the piece.
